Manual scheduling can be useful in the early stages of a project when high-level target dates have been set but the detailed tasks and timing have not. If you use manual scheduling, keep in mind that you are not taking advantage of the scheduling engine in Project. In the Task Mode column (which should be displayed by default in the Entry table), a pushpin icon appears for manually scheduled tasks: You'll notice a status pop-up on the bottom left of the screen when you open or create a new a project indicating the scheduling method that is being used for new tasks.
